Understanding Adversity and STEM Persistence
The project is funded by the National Science Foundation and examines the effects of adversity experiences on student motivation to pursue STEM majors and student persistence and performance in STEM degree programs. The project aims to develop and use a model that predicts how different sources of adversity affect STEM motivation, persistence, and performance.
The longitudinal study will include surveys of first-time, first-year STEM majors enrolled in introductory Chemistry and Psychology courses at two large minority-serving and economically diverse public research institutions. The project seeks to identify patterns of adversity and determine which profiles have the strongest association with STEM persistence and achievement, examine how longitudinal patterns in motivation and performance operate as a function of adversity, and determine how adversity profiles and adversity levels change over time. |
Health and Academic Success of African American College Students Study (HASICs)
This study ran from 2016-2018. The primary objective of this project was to examine risk and protective factors that contribute to the positive development of African American young adults. Specifically, the proposed study examined factors that buffer the effects of experiencing racial discrimination on psychological well-being and academic outcomes for African American youth who were pursuing a college education. The risk and protective factors spanned multiple ecological levels including individual, peer, family, and cultural factors. The study utilized a survey methodology to inquire about Georgia State University student’s experiences with racial discrimination and messages received across multiple ecological contexts. The outcome variables of interest were factors related to culturally relevant coping mechanisms for racial discrimination as well as academic outcomes and overall mental health and well-being. |
